Having spent years as a professional dancer, Djeneba Aduayom spent her life thinking about movement and the human body. After an injury caused her to rethink her life and career, Aduayom began seeking other outlets to express her creativity. She picked up a camera and began exploring the human body in another way. Born in Togo with a mix of French, Italian, and African heritage, Aduayom reflects this rich cultural background in her portraits.
Whether she is photographing a model or herself, the figures depicted in her photographs are almost always captured mid-motion. Combined with an eccentric palate of color and fashion, Aduayom is able to bring out her imagined world into our real one. Initially frustrated with the lockdown orders, the limitation created by this situation led to Aduayom making use of what she has in hand to create an alternate world borne of her imagination.
